When people ask the question how much does a horse cost, the answer is usually limited with the initial expense of purchasing the horse. While this is may be reasonable to a certain extent, there is a whole lot more to horse costing than the amount of money given for the purchase of the animal.

Sometimes, people who think about getting a horse do not realize the actual total costs that they would have to incur. These expenses extend to the actual caring of the horse and include the following:

· Stable fees. If you do not have your own farm or any land where you could situate the horse, then this is something that you have to pay for. Stable fees vary depending on the size of the rented area and the proximity of it to the city. Larger areas that are closer to the city have relatively higher fees. The usual stable fees offered today are $200 for the lowest and more than $500 for the highest, on a monthly basis. Let assume for the meantime the lowest price and calculate for the expenses here alone towards the year end. That is $200 x 12= $2400. That is a whopping more than a couple of dollars for the stable fees alone.

· Food expenses. Some firms that rent out stables include food in their over-all charges. In this case, it is not necessary to include it anymore. However, if you have your own farm and have decided to reside the horse in that farm, then food expenses is something that you need to include in you animal care budget. Horses eat hay and they consume approximately 20 pound so hay every day. This is not a very rough estimate as it can increase or decrease depending on your horse’s size and consumption. If we settle with 20 pounds per day and compute it towards the year end, you shall have 3660 pounds of hay for a year. The cost for this is usually around $2 for every 20 pounds and it can vary depending on your location.

· Bedding and shaving costs. This is also included in your horse’s care. For this, it can be a weekly expense at a cost of $4.00 per week. If we calculate that towards a year end, we have more than $200.

· Veterinarian and deworming fees. Just like humans, horses need also to be looked after with their healthcare. They also need immunizations, hoof trim, etc. The costs for these depend on the actual costs of medicine, the veterinarian’s call fees, frequency of administration, etc. Veterinarian fees are among the most expensive in horse care yet oftentimes, people forget to address this when they answer the question on how much does a horse cost. If you horse stays in good perfect health, then expenses can range at only $300 for immunizations. If your horse contacts a disease, that would mean an expensive $500 to $1000 for that single incident.

If you are thinking about the horse, the things that have been mentioned are something that you should consider. Giving a reply to the question how much does a horse cost entails a significant deliberation of those things.
