How Much Does College Cost?

Like most basic necessities, the cost of going to college consistently increases. How much does college cost? Surveys released this year fixed the cost of going to college anywhere between $100 to $1,400 over what it cost last year. This includes tuition and other miscellaneous fees, and depends on the quality of the school, subsidies and other factors. The most generous estimate is pegged at $35,000 per year. This may sound discouraging, but not when you know that over $143 billion in subsidies is available to deserving students who may be interested in availing themselves of some help. The bottom line is, college can be affordable for students who are resourceful, in spite of the hike in cost.

Much of the cost of going to college depends on the type of school that you will choose. While high-profile schools may be prohibitive in terms of cost, there are other schools that offer four-year degree courses at much lesser rates. In fact, over half of the college student population is actually spending less than $10,000 per year for their college education.

The good news is that much of the cost of a college education can be set off by subsidies and grants. All schools also offer many different forms of financial assistance that are offered to the underprivileged or deserving students.

How much does college cost in a private school? A four-year degree course will typically fetch over $25,000. In public schools, however, a four-year course will cost less than $7,000 per year while a two-year course will generally average $2,500. However, also note that almost 40 percent of students in public schools who are enrolled in four-year programs only have to shell out at least $3,000 per year. In case you still find this rate too much for your budget, the next best thing is to enroll in a two-year course in any of the local public schools, just like over 30 percent of the college students have done.

Of course, it’s not only the tuition and miscellaneous fees that need to be factored in. There is also the cost of board and lodging. The average overhead cost for room and board is $400, give or take a few dollars depending on the profile of the school that you are looking out. But all these are still not enough. Full-time students who live outside the state where their college school is will also be required to pay surcharges. This is because they are using up the resources that should have been allotted for state residents. At less than $11,000 on average, this could make a rather big dent on the pocket.

It is actually difficult to accurately calculate the many different costs and expenses to arrive at an exact answer to the question, how much does college cost. However, education should never be considered as an expense but an investment. If you spend now, you can be sure that you will reap even bigger rewards in the future.
