How much does an Abortion cost?

An unwanted pregnancy among teenagers can be quiet devastating. Becoming a parent is a vital decision to make. It entails a lot of responsibilities and duties. Being a parent is also among the noblest things that you can do in your entire lifetime. But when you get pregnant in the wrong time or in the wrong circumstance, you may have considered this option. You may have asked yourself questions like how much does an abortion cost? Where can I legally get an abortion?

Studies have shown that about 49% of pregnancies in the United State are unintended and almost half of the number is ended by abortion.  Through the years, almost 39 million legal abortions have occurred in the USA alone. According to other statistics, 2 out of 100 women within the ages of 15 to 44 went through an abortion.

Abortion is an intentional act of terminating pregnancy after a woman’s conception. It enables women to end their pregnancy but it involves killing an undeveloped embryo or fetus. Abortion is still a controversial topic in American politics these days. Since 1973, abortion has already been legalized in the United States.

There can be several factors that may affect the cost of abortion such as the pregnancy term, facility being used and the type of procedure used. So how much does an abortion cost?

·    First Trimester Abortions. Studies have shown that the average cost of abortion during the first trimester would be around $350 to $ 550.
·    Second & Third Trimesters. The last 2 trimesters would cost more compared to the initial period.
·    Surgical abortions cost around $400- $450 during the 1st trimester, $500-$600 during the 13th to 14th weeks and $650-$800 at the 15th to the 16th week.
·    A study was conducted in the year 2001 and revealed that the average total cost of abortion in the USA is around $468. In the same study, it was found out that 87% of private health care plans already cover abortion expenses.
·    Non-surgical abortion, also known as ‘abortion by pill’, would cost between $500 and $600.
·    In several health centers (e.g. Planned Parenthood), abortion fee ranges from $225 to $575 for 1st trimester abortions.

Tips:
·    If you are currently enrolled in an insurance program, be sure to review your policy thoroughly. There are some policies which don’t cover abortion procedures.
·    If you have received MedicAid, you can call the National Abortion hotline (800) 772-9100 and check if MedicAid can cover abortion in your region. Be sure to ask the customer service representative for a list of facilities that can accept MedicAid.
·    If you don’t have enough funds, you can also seek help from the National Abortion Federation for resources. There are hospitals and clinics that offer help to women who can’t pay for the procedure. You may ask local hospitals for “medical assistance” if you belong to the low income bracket. You may call your state’s Department of Social & Health Services and sign up for a Medical Assistance Program.
