A flagstone is a type of decorative stone popularly used in forming pavements and in a range of construction projects. Not to be confused with slate, a metamorphic rock of clay or volcanic ash composition; flagstones are sedimentary rocks composed mostly of feldspar. · Availability. Flagstones are quarried in places where there is an abundance of sedimentary rocks. In the United States, states such as Arizona, Pennsylvania and Texas hold a significant reserve of sedimentary rock formations.
· Type. There are different types of flagstones. The Arizona Flagstone, being very abundant is cheaper compared to the other types. Other types include the Colorado flagstones and New Mexico Buff flagstone. Most though, prefer the Pennsylvania blue flagstone due to its relatively smoother texture, ideal for both indoor and outdoor floorings.
· Color. Flagstones’ predominant color is determined as to where it is formed and its binding materials. Red flagstones come most common and are cheaper while rarer colors such as buff, green and gray are more expensive.
· Size and Thickness. Flagstones maybe split into layers, as thin as 1 – 1 ½ inches to as thick as 2 – 3 inches, with the thicker cuts more costly; and in different sizes in square inch, ranging from 12 x 12 until 24 x 36 inches.
With these factors considered, how much does Flagstone cost? Flagstone price depend on how much you would buy and the area they would cover, the wider or larger the area the more costly it would be. Individual stones may cost for as low as $2 a piece for more common types, to $4 a piece for rarer types. Other sources may also sell the stones on a per ton basis, ranging from $95/ton to as costly as $500/ton depending on the type. You can also employ general contractors who offer a package for laying flagstones, from supplying to labor.
Comparing with the more contemporary construction pieces, flagstones are significantly costly; however considering the long run, aesthetic appeal that would never fade and stability that would stand the test of times, flagstones are worth their price.
