How Much does Collagen Injections Cost?

Collagen Injections: Are they really worth it? What are they and are they safe for you? Are they cost effective?
First of all, let’s discuss what Collagen is. It is the main protein in our connective tissues and is found in our bones, cartilage, our skin and our tendons. Around eighty percent of our skin is Collagen and plays the vital role of supporting the skins elasticity and strength. But with age comes the breakdown of Collagen leading to loss of suppleness, wrinkling, sagging, lines and folds in our skin.

If Collagen were batteries and they run out, new batteries come in the form of Collagen Injections which replenish the depleted protein. They have been used for many decades to treat related impurities in the skin. Some results include fuller lips and less lines and folds.

The Collagen “fillers” are derived from either cows (bovines) or humans and the preparation process of the fillers involves extraction, purification, and sterilization. After which the extract is liquefied to be used in the treatment. Before the treatment, the patients’ medical history must be analyzed to see if previous illnesses will prevent them from being treated with Collagen and then a skin test is performed to see if the patient will have allergic reactions to the Collagen, however, human Collagen extracts require no such test because they are native to our skin and body making them a very good alternative.

Now, how much does Collagen Injections cost? It is actually the type and quantity used in the procedure that will dictate its final cost, but on average, they will range from $250-1500. There are four general types of fillers namely: Bovine, Dermalogen, Autologen and Isolagen all of which have different price ranges.

Bovine Collagen is the most common of all types which range at around $250-800 per session. It is most commonly the cheapest type of collagen and effect will last for around six to twelve weeks or maybe up to a year but will depend on the quality of the product used and the patient as well.

Dermalogen comes from the skin of deceased donors. This type lasts longer than Bovine Collagen however they cost more. They range from $500-1000 per session.

Autologen comes from Human skin extracted from previous operations. They cost at around $800-1000 per session and also lasts longer than Bovine Collagen.

Isolagen is the most expensive type of all ranging from $1000-1500 per session and is also the most effective type. It is derived from cloned ‘collagen-making’ cells from behind our ears and the since it is hard to manufacture it is the most costly but yields the best results out of all.
In conclusion, “Are they really worth it?” Yes they are if you want to decrease skin impurities. “Are they safe for you?” They are safe apart from some allergic reactions and compared to other methods there is no actual surgery that will happen. “Are they cost effective?” Compared to other Plastic Surgery procedures which cost thousands of dollars, yes, they are.
