For mothers who would want to have nice looking lawns, they are willing enough to go through a lot of aesthetic methods. Sod is like an ‘instant lawn’ either rolled out through machines or arranged in mats or rolls. Sod is actually grass harvested form a ground where it is commercially grown. Sod can either be harvested in squares or rolls, which makes it more convenient to install in your lawn, very much like installing a carpet in your home. The grass rolls usually measure from 2 to 5 feet wide and with lengths ranging from 10 to 30 feet. It would be advisable to install newly harvested sod within 24 to 48 hours to achieve best results. So how much does sod cost?

Sod grown for your lawn can cost more than planting grass or making use of grass plugs in your lawn. Sod prices are usually determined through the following factors:

Quality sod usually takes two years to grow and cultivate.

Sod needs to be treated with pesticides, herbicides and other fertilizers for optimum health.

In order to come up with quality sods, it needs an excellent irrigation system.

The machine used in harvesting sods is very expensive.

The maintenance of herbicides, fertilizers, pesticides for & moving 2 years is quite expensive.

The prices of sod can vary depending on the kind of grass you want to install (Buffalo, Bermuda, St. Augustine, Blue Rye, Ryegrass, Bahia, Bluegrass, Centipede, Fescue, & etc).

How much does sod cost?

Taking into consideration all the factors mentioned above, finished sod usually costs around 8 to 30 cents for every square foot. It can be more costly to purchase sod in a retail store so make sure you get your supplies form a nearby plant nursery. Try to purchase in bulk and get to take advantage of wholesale discounts. If you want to have your front and back lawn done of 20 x 50 each, expect to pay around $160 to $600 for a total area of 2000 square feet.

If you would want your sod to be professionally installed will double the cost from 14 to 60 cents for every square foot. That would be around $280 to $1000 for an area of 2000 square feet. A certain contractor may also use a specialized tool for installing sods which are 42 inches wide and 128 feet long. This can help you save labor costs and at the same time create fewer seams and have the job done faster. The cost per square footage on a larger and flatter area that can be installed mechanically can range from $6,500 to $10,000 for an acre.

A contractor can charge more if you have a steeper slope, a non rectangular lawn or area, or have a narrow access making it necessary to install the sod by hand or other special situations. If you would opt to install your very own sod, you can buy directly from a grower at affordable wholesale prices.
