What exactly is Aerogel, what is it used for and how much does Aerogel cost? These questions about this curious sponge-like substance may be on the mind of a few people who wonder why there is so much attention being paid to this gel-like substance. Aerogel is actually a substance that comes about when four chemicals are mixed. This then develops into a wet gel that resembles a gelatin dessert and this substance is heated in an autoclave to be dried for use with such projects like the Stardust project where samples of cometary particles and interstellar bits can be captured in the porous gel.

Aerogel can be used for other things like for insulation and optical components and is considered to be the lightest solid in the world. It has three times the density of air, is nearly transparent and is very strong too. This makes it one of the most useful light solid substances around and can be used for making things like surfboards, satellites, acoustic insulation and catalytic filters. The manufacture of such products with Aerogel however is limited since the substance itself is rather expensive to produce as well as to sell.

When you need to answer the question of how much does Aerogel cost, you will find that cost of this substance is rather high since there is very little demand for it yet. A breadboard sized slab of Aerogel that is a half inch thick may end up costing you around $900. This price is expected to drop should demand increase and the companies producing these Aerogel slabs are projecting a $35 price per square foot of the product in the near future to a very low $10 for every square foot of Aerogel as long as demands for the product go up to at least 600 thousand square feet every year. This increase in production will help lower the cost of this versatile yet very strong material and can be seen used in many applications soon if demand for it does rise and prices do fall.

These days however, with the price for Aerogel still pegged at a rather high amount, people are somewhat hesitant to use it for manufacturing products that can be made from it at this moment. The question of how much does Aerogel cost is still answered with a rather high amount and for now, only certain entities that need the qualities of this super gel without having to worry about budget like NASA and other similar companies can afford to buy and use Aerogel for their projects and needs. There has been word however that a group of Malaysian researchers are working to produce this substance for commercial use at costs that are infinitely lower that it is these days and with the use of a substance that is usually discarded in Asian countries, rice husks. If this project and plan for producing cheaper Aerogel is successful, you may very well soon see numerous products being made from it and people reaping the benefits of having a lightweight yet very durable material on their hands.
